Some people, including myself, have copies of the Vapor Trails CDs that have many occurrences of clipping that cause the recording to crackle on playback. I've ripped the audio off of my CD to analyze it with Sound Forge. There are many visible signs of clipping in the waveforms that correspond to crackling. Click on any of the links below to view examples of this - clipping instances are circled in purple. The examples show the timestamp of the recording in question, so if you have similar tools, perhaps you can try a similar test.
