The Boss's official site (© 2005 Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Inc.):

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

What my ears (and others) hear:

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man

'Scuse me, while I kiss this guy.

You know what, you're right. I think I might be remembering a live version. The holiday had me thinking about that song and I thought Sony had gotten all PC about the reference.

BTW, Scot Hacker has the best site regarding misheard lyrics: The Archive of Misheard Lyrics.

I never had that problem with that particular Bruce song. But there are many more that I did mishear. I also enjoy singing the theme to the Gilmore Girls wrong. I hear different lyrics in the song than they actually are, it has been a while though so I will have to think about it. But I guarantee a laugh when it occurs to me what I thought they were singing.

This is more misremembered than misheard; I don't own a copy of the song and haven't heard it for a while. I was remembering its message and when I saw what turned out to be the real lyric I thought it had been the victim of editing. I just went and checked the published studio and live version outtakes on Amazon; both include the first version of the lyrics. I don't know if Bruce has ever changed the lyrics live.

If he did it would be relevant, that was obviously the war the song was about.

I actually had a bet with a girl regarding the lyrics of the Beach Boys "Kokomo": she thought the line "Martinique, that Montserrat mystique" was "Martinique, that mount of rotten stink" :)

That lyrics site is awesome. My favorites are:

REM "Losing My Religion":
"That's me in the corner"
"Let's pee in the corner"
(for obvious reasons :)

Rush "The Trees":
"and the oaks just shake their heads"
"and the folks just sh*t their beds"

and
"Mrs. Robinson":
Jesus loves you more than you will know.

"She's a slut. That's more than you should know."

> "Let's pee in the corner"
> (for obvious reasons :)

Now we gotta get you-know-who to read my blog. ;)
