MSN Spaces

There's some buzz going on around the beta launch of MSN Spaces today. I signed up to check it out. 10MB of space is a real non-starter for me. I'll try some low-fi blogging on it just to see how easy it is to use and customize.

Update: Ross and I synched up on this. I posted a test entry on my test space.

It has been experiencing technical difficulties. I have used Blogger to checkout features and I doubt MSN Spaces will equal that service. But who knows.

MSN Spaces = Ugly and Slow. Even the word Beta is choppy text, I get the feeling that I am building my first Geocities website with this interface.

Parts of it are definitely rough. I like the fact that it seems they are trying to play nice with other blogs, assuming their RSS 2.0 is valid and their Trackbacks are compatible. With a little more polish, it could be great for starter blogs.

Yes, I noticed those features too. But I also noticed the warnings that I am not using IE. They need to polish the templating system as well. If you choose anything other than the default the themes just do not look very nice.

I am sure some of the slowdown is everyone trying the service. Slashdot users and the like and I know a lot of folks use MSN services so the service will be a success. I actually kind of like how it tied my .net info in automatically. Very easy to get started.

FYI: the 10MB limit only applies to photos. Everything else is virtually unlimited.

Mike, thanks for the visit. Your Space looks great; it's good that you're using the current feature set to the max. I'll probably get more interested once there are export (and import?) mechanisms for entries & comments and the style of an individual's site is more customizable.
