Star Wars Original Trilogy DVDs Reviewed

Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)   Star Wars Trilogy (Full Screen Edition)

I'm looking forward to the release of the SW trilogy - I'll be ordering my copy soon. There's an excellently detailed review of the set over at The Digital Bits.

I'm still glad I have the original theatrical releases on DVD-R. I can imagine the collective uproar once the Star Wars geeks see Hayden Christensen in the ending of ROTJ...

The only version of the movies I ever bought were the Special Edition Widescreen VHS tapes. I haven't watched them for a while, mainly due to the fact that letterboxed movies on VHS look like crap compared to anamorphic widescreen progressive-scanned DVD. It'll be cool to finally have a version of them on DVD. As I've blogged before, I wish the theatrical releases were getting the treatment, but I'll take these.

I'm disappointed not in the changes (the revised Jabba in ANH looks MUCH better than the 1997 version), but in the fact that they're not taking this opportunity to include additional footage in the movies. I had the Star Wars storybook (actually, I may still have it in the archives), which includes pictures and dialogue from the Biggs/Luke Tatooine scene. When I was a kid I was confused why I'd never seen that in the movie. I'd like to see stuff like that integrated into the films.

One thing I neglected to mention when posting the entry is that I believe the original theatrical exhibition of the first film is the first movie I can recall seeing at a theater. My mom or dad would have to verify (I think they have before). I think it was Malco's Highland theater in Memphis.

I just wanted to add, that the original theatrical Star Wars movie was the first movie I saw in a theater as well.

Also, I too wish that the DVD's being released were the original theatrical versions of the movies. I have not decided if I will buy these yet or not. I do think my son would enjoy them, so I probably will. But I have been disappointed enough in the changes and the new trilogy to look past the release. I just feel that the changes and the new movies are a huge toy commercial, and that is very disappointing to me.
