Star Wars DVDs Out This Fall

As seen on Cinescape: Lucasfilm has confirmed that the first three Star Wars movies will be released in a DVD box set on September 21st. It's supposed to be similar packaging to the Indiana Jones set, with a fourth DVD of interviews and featurettes. These are supposedly the "Special Editions" of the films, as re-released in the late 90's.

This is good news, as the widescreen VHS versions of the Special Editions I own show aren't very pleasant to watch on an HDTV. I can remember trips to see each of the movies' original releases in the theater (I can just barely remember going to see SW:ANH for the first time) and was a Star Wars toy nut between Empire and ROTJ. I plan on picking up a copy of the set the day it comes out.

Update: There's a petition for Lucasfilm to release the original edits of the films on DVD here. I think I'd actually prefer having these on DVD. There were plenty of neat effects added to the Special Editions, but having Greedo shoot first and Han walking on Jabba's tail is just silly.

Update 2: The Official Word.

I was pretty much in love with Carrie Fisher growing up(as well as Dawn Wells(Mary Ann from Giligan) and Joyce DeWitt(Janet from 3's Company)). I never got to see the first Star Wars in a theater. But I did see it at my friend's house on one of the first HUGE VCR's. You literally push a button in(manually) and the whole top raised up and you could insert the tape. Then you had to manually press down the top again.

Anyway, I had so many toys. Yoda's Degobah(sp?) system, the rebel base, land speeder, Falcon... ah memories.

Yep, I had probably 60+ action figures, including multiple versions of Han, Luke, Vader, etc. Probably the funniest thing I noticed as a kid was that the Hoth Rebel Base playset was just the Tatooine playset painted white as opposed to beige.

I remember seeing all three movies in the theaters, watching _Star Wars_ on HBO about 20 times when it premiered, borrowing the videotapes from the local library (we didn't have a '70's style VCR like Shane, but ours had a wired remote...). Somewhere at my mom's house is the original original trilogy on VHS (in fullscreen, though - I kept the widescreen Special Edition trilogy just because it was widescreen).

Man, the wayback machine is turning; I, too, adored Carrie Fisher for quite a while, especially after ROTJ. She is still a good looking lady.

I'm sure we rented the tapes at several points, but I didn't own a copy of the movies until my Special Edition VHS set. My old roommate Dan had bought the original re-issued (1995?) trilogy VHS set so there was no need. Can't wait for the "real" DVDs to sit alongside the "next gen" ones. ;)

Edit: I guess I should say "previous gen" when referring to the prequel films! :)

I prefer the original format the best. Star Wars is the first film I remember seeing in a movie theater. That is how cool of a movie it was. I am not sure if it was the first film I saw, but I recall seeing that film and nothing before. I was six years old when it was out.

I had a ton of toys as well. I believe all of them are still at my mom's house in the attic and in the basement. I mostly remember my Darth Vader case, the one of many cases I had filled with figures.

I was really hoping for the original theatrical releases (non-SE), maybe with the THX sound enhancements if anything. I really can't stand the SE enhanced scenes, especially the Jabba dance scene...I really feel that they take away from the movies. I guess I'll be hanging on to my VCR after all, as I only have it to watch the widescreen VHS original trilogy that I have.
