Virtual Machines

I'm beta testing VMware GSX Server 3.0 today; it's pretty cool. I'm also about to get my hands on a copy of MS/Connectix Virtual PC; it will be neat to compare the two VM platforms and see how they stack up. The Virtual Server product (beta release next quarter) will be more interesting to me, since it should compete directly with GSX Server.

Anyone reading this a user or fan of x86-based virtual machines?

Now I am new to the VMware I believe you are talking about(remember I am UNIX guy mainly). But that is the software that enables you to partition machines out to be multiple machines and you can define memory, CPU all hardware to specific partitions right? I use a little VM on the mainframe for the Linux Partitions we have on the OS390.

All of these VM products are cool. A guy was in here running VM on his laptop that had Red Hat and Windows booted and ready to use on one machine. I looked into the product after experimenting with his laptop, but for home use it was a tiny bit pricey. This was a year ago or more.

Yeah, that's the software. It encapsulates a pretty generic PC platform and controls access to disks and network. This is stuff I'm doing at work. We have a Linux partition on our OS/390 as well.

All of it is really cool, we are up to 18 Partitions currently on our OS/390 and growing. I know how NT staff was talking with me about VMware that they are now testing. They said that it is really cool.

I know the PC version that I used was just awesome. So much better than dual boot, with the push of a button you could toggle between totally different OS's ready for your use. Very cool.

I'd like to call a moment of silence for Connectix, creators of Virtual PC (A Mac-only product for many years, now a Microsoft product), which begat Virtual Server.

Also, those Cue-ball Quickcams were originally a Connectix product. Logitech owns that line of products now.

I have Color Quickcam sitting in a box somewhere - what an excellent product it was for the time. Before the end of its useful life, I perched it above my son's crib and connected it to an old notebook to take periodic pictures of him as a newborn.

I'm impressed by both Virtual PC and VMware GSX 3.0 - both appear to have excellent memory management. With past versions of VMware, each VM's tended to use as much physical memory as was allocated to it.
