New Ogg Vorbis Release and Icecast2 Beta

I'm a huge fan and user of both Ogg Vorbis and Icecast2. I just found out that Vorbis v1.0.1 was released last Thursday, and that Icecast2 has officially entered beta testing. It's been what I consider a "stable alpha" for quite a while.

I've recently re-launched WCYG (my streaming Vorbis station that uses Icecast2, Oddcast, and Foobar2000) since the build of my new server. If you'd like to give it a listen and would like the address, let me know.

I would love to give it a listen Alex. You know my email address. :)

If only iTunes supported OGG streams...

Scott, just got back from our T-day weekend trip. Will send you the URL soon; glad to hear of the interest.

I gave it a listen some last night and some this morning so far. Lots of good tunes. Alice in Chains, Big Head Todd, Dream Theator and Rush. All commercial free and none stop. What more can a guy ask for.

That is just a taste of what I have heard so far, I will be anxiously waiting to see what other artists show up.

Cool. I got just a quick playlist online before heading out of town early last week. I've just added a lot more stuff. I'm trying to be picky, as opposed to just broadcasting my entire collection.

I'm also playing with the quality vs. bandwidth ratio.

Quality sounds great and no buffering problems.

Earlier today I heard 3 Doors Down and Extreme along with the others I heard previously. Will definitely be giving your stream a listen some more.

Hey Alex, I looked around at these pieces of software, downloaded a few of them also. I have not looked in extreme detail at any of them. Other than playing with FooBar2000 to listen to your stream.

How hard is it to set up a stream. I could not find any clearcut directions on the process. Well, I imagine it is there, but each piece has it's own website and each has it's own long documentation. Just curious if you knew of any easy "how-to" anywhere. I get a lot of independent music sent to me and I would love to stream some of it. Thanks in advance.

It's not too hard. I used to stream with Nullsoft's Shoutcast, which introduced me to the technology and the methods. Icecast2 is the streaming server that web clients connect to, but it does not generate the stream content. What I do is install Foobar2000 and the Oddcast version for FB2K, and use that install as my stream source.

In FB2K's DSP manager you move all the DSP's you want active into the left-hand column; at minimum, you'd want "Volume Control" and "Oddcast" active. I also use gap- and silence-killing DSPs, as well as the soft limiter. Oddcast should be at the bottom of the list.

You need to configure Oddcast to talk to you Icecast2 server (it can be on the same machine). I configure Oddcast to convert the FB2K audio into an 44.1kHz stereo Ogg Vorbis stream of quality level "0" (~64kbps) or "-1" (~50kbps). Make the mountpoint "/.ogg".

I can give you more detailed instructions through email if you want. Figured posting something here might inspire more independent streamers. ;)

I will give your instructions a shot. If I have problems I might take you up on the more detailed instructions. ;)

I can tell you have a knack for the audio software. I have read where you posted about remixing Rush and such. I have never considered myself a music artist. But I do love music. I can just tell you seem to have a talent with these items so I thought rather than muddle through the documentation on three different websites that I would ask someone in the know. So if I seem a bit off on any terminology it is because as far as Computers for media, I am a newbie.

Keep up with the music stream, I like it. :)

Oh yeah, is any of the Rush stuff you stream anything that you worked with?

I meant remaster, not remix. I told you I was a newbie. :)

I've only remastered Presto so far. I'd been so concerned with getting a CD of that made for the car that I hadn't yet put it in my online collection. Once I get that done I'll add it to the playlist.

I have only one of my covers, an acoustic version of Boston's "Amanda", on the playlist. I'll probably pick and choose some more stuff from my own recordings, but since they pale in comparison to the pros, don't hold your breath. ;)
