CD Review: Our Lady Peace "Live"

Our Lady Peace has been one of my favorite bands ever since I first heard "Starseed" from their album Naveed. My favorite OLP album is Spiritual Machines. Even though that album's not well-represented on their new Live CD, I think it's a great sampling of their catalog. And I have an additional reason to appreciate the CD (and the upcoming DVD); I've never taken the opportunity to see an OLP show.

Having been recorded on the Gravity tour, that album is well-represented, having five of Live's 14 tracks. That's not a bad thing, as Gravity has a great mix of hook-laden songs. In fact, the CD (and I'm assuming the concerts that were recorded) opens with Gravity's opening song, "All For You".
The production of this album is pretty good. There is plenty of crowd noise to be had, and the overall volume level is pretty high. The mix is superb and clear.
My favorite track so far is "Innocent", mainly because of its extended intro and subsequent hooks. It's a very catchy song. I'm not a huge enough OLP fan to know every song on every album, or all the lyrics, but this album is highly enjoyable to me. It makes a good "greatest hits" package if you're hesitiant to buy OLP's albums. I recommend it and I'm looking forward to purchasing the companion DVD when it comes out this fall.

I guess I'm even less of a fan - I really only like "Superman's Dead" and "Whatever" from that list. But that's probably more due to a lack of exposure to the rest of their material, regardless of how hard you've tried.. :)

Did you at least check out the "samples" I gave you? ;)

Our Lady Peace has come a long way, it's nice to see them releasing a live album. Breaking away from some insipid stereo-typicalness. What I'm wondering is, is the song Our Time is Fading written about 'God?' It'd be interesting to learn.
