Rush Gets Screwed Again

Rush's first album came out in 1974. Even though they're still together and producing new music, they've technically been eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1999. Despite their success and the fact that this season the RRHOF Museum has a Rush exhibit, they've once again been denied induction into the Hall of Fame. I like The Police a lot and I'm glad they're getting some recognition this year (perhaps they'll get together in NYC for the induction concert). But Rush has had such a great career and impact on rock music that it's hard to understand why they've been ignored so far by the Hall.

There's clearly a bias against so-called "musician's bands". Whither King Crimson? Yes? Genesis? Hell, Genesis probably fits the RNRHOF's current criteria, based solely on their commercial success, and that of both Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel.

Hey, for that matter, where's Peter Gabriel's induction? His first album came out 26 years ago...

OK, I'm going to have to troll around the net today and post a list of RRHOF petitions for the bands we've mentioned!

The music industry simply doesn't give credit to non greatly commercial bands. That's all. And if you see the album reviews by any "critic" through history, they've always thrashed out very well elaborated rock band efforts.
So what can you expect from a sales-driven industry?
Rush is great we don't need any Hall Of Fame approval to look up at them.

I was astounded that AC/DC got into the HoF before Rush... I mean, AC/DC are ok, but they've not had nearly the impact on music and musical styles that Rush has had.

I have to agree that there seems to be a bias against bands that haven't been huge commercial successes, and that's really sad. It tends to invalidate a great deal of what the Hall of Fame should stand for - those who are true pioneers and have helped chart the course for the future of rock music. Rush clearly belongs in the Hall of Fame and I can only hope that someday soon the HoF will "get it".
